About the Speaker

Walter Levitt, Chief Marketing Officer, Canwest Broadcasting
As Chief Marketing Officer for Canwest Broadcasting, Walter Levitt oversees brand strategy, promotion, publicity and content distribution for all of the company's Canadian broadcasting assets.  This includes conventional television network Global Television and eighteen specialty channels including Food Network, HGTV, National Geographic and History Television.  Walter is also responsible for the marketing of Canwest Broadcasting's digital media brands.

Among his achievements at Canwest, Walter has led several comprehensive network re-branding initiatives including Global Television, Showcase, TVtropolis and DIY Network.  He has played a key role in Global's ratings resurgence, overseeing the launches of many new top 10 programs including Heroes and Glee.  He was responsible for negotiating Global's landmark video-on-demand agreement with Rogers - the country's first major primetime VOD offering.  Walter was also a key member of the Canwest management team that oversaw the successful integration of the Alliance Atlantis broadcast assets.  These and other achievements led Canwest to be named "2007 Media Player of the Year" by Marketing Magazine.

Walter joined Canwest in 2005 from Alliance Atlantis where, over a period of eight years, he held progressively senior marketing roles including Senior Vice President, Marketing & Creative Services.  Walter was responsible for consumer, trade and affiliate marketing for its thirteen well-branded specialty channels and international television distribution business including the CSI franchise.  Under his leadership Alliance Atlantis was widely recognized for its innovative and industry-leading marketing efforts, winning numerous Canadian and international awards and in 2004 was named "Media Player of the Year" by Marketing Magazine.

Prior to Alliance Atlantis, Walter worked in marketing roles at the CTV Television Network and at CJEZ-FM in Toronto. A Montreal native, he began his career as an on-air producer at radio station CKGM.

Walter has been a guest speaker at marketing & branding conferences in both Canada and the U.S., and in 2008 was featured in a special issue of Marketing Magazine as one of the industry's "Top 100 Thought Leaders".  Walter has also been actively involved with industry organizations including the Canadian Association of Broadcasters, the Canadian Marketing Association and CTAM Canada.  His community involvement has included work with the AIDS Committee of Toronto, the University Health Network and the United Jewish Appeal.  Walter resides in Toronto with his wife and three children, but still considers Montreal home.
